the entrance song shouldnt even be an issue with us , it needs to be decided by the team. not to sound negative but several efforts have been made to make and play pre-game music, and entrance songs. but to no avail the "people in the press box" have always had an excuse why its not played. i dont know who lets them up there they are so anti football its ridiculous. i dont think they should give up though , every school in the country gets to have their music played! its hard to believe that our own faculty/staff is so unfavorable and so unsupportive. its sad but so true and so obvious.
There are two isses here. One, pre-game music and the other, entrance music. Before addressing either, let's set the record straight. Our faculty & staff is not unfavorable or unsupportive. They want a winner and will do whatever they can to help produce one.
Let's begin with the pre-game music. Most of what has been played up until the last year or two were home made CD's by yours truly. They were a mix of classic rock, country, motown and pop designed to appeal to several demographic groups. There were a few occassions when a CD would be misplaced or loaned out and whoever was in charge would have to ad lib. That is when you might get beach music. It wasn't until last year that we allowed a submission from a player for a pre-game CD. Our principal reviewed the music the day before the home opener and deemed that a couple of songs were inaaporopriate. The player later admitted that there were probably a couple that he should have left off. Since it was late, we left the choice of music to the people in charge. Sorry you did not like it. For the record, I made some fresh CD's this winter for the purpose of submitting them for pre-game music. To test them, we've played them in the weight room this spring. For the most part they have been well received. The only issue that has bothered me about pre-game music is that our stuff has been censored yet other sports and the middle school seem to play whatever they want. I've approached the admistration regarding this and they were unaware of the problem. They agree that whatever is the standard for one must be the standard for all.
As for entrance music. That is more problematic. As you can see from these posts alone, everyone has a different opinion. I also think we will always be asked to include our band in some way. I've been to a lot of games over the years from the NFL on down. If a team has a band (NFL teams do not), I'd say in 80% of all cases, that band plays at some point when the team comes out. To me, what is needed to compromise here is a well orchestrated buildup of "pump me up" music that leads to the the team coming out and going into the tunnel. After they are in place they should actually run out to the school fight song. We tried this two years ago and again last year. I'm not sure that happened this past season but there seemed to be communication problems between the press box and the field. Honestly, when all this is supposed to be taking place I have other things on my mind. I also want to remind you all that until last year, the PA system was so crappy that nothing we did was very motivating.
Hang is there. Just like the play on the field, things will improve.
you guys should be worried more about getting things straight in the huddle, then worrying about how good you look when you come out. A fancy entrance doesn't win football games. As a former player from the last playoff team, I can honestly say we were more worried about getting the W then if our band was playing the right song, or our cougar statue should be replaced. The season starts in 2 months, PREPARE! PREPARE! PREPARE!
Anonymous - June 15th: I totally agree with you as far as preparation. Do you think though that it helps the fans and the players to get into the game if after their preparation the excitement is bolstered, encouraged, and clearly shown? And since we are trying to make a big change in the total way we play football -- of course getting more Ws - that sometimes changing the scenery can help in your mindset for truly making a big change? For instance, if you want to stop smoking - then you have to stop hanging out with the smokers during smoke break - because otherwise it becomes easy to do the same old habits. I'm not saying that these changes will make all the difference - but perhaps, just perhaps - they can't hurt and maybe they will even help us all -- fans, players, coaches get into the right mindset for doing things differently... including preparing better, working harder in practice, executing better on the field... My thoughts may be wrong - do you completely disagree? Anyone else?
blah blah blah...what about remember the name by fort minor " 10% luck 20% skill 15% concentrated power of will 5% pleasure 50% pain 100% reason to remember the name." in my opinion back in black and the old ac/dc songs are a little out dated for this generation. this song rocks ROCK HARD!
I believe the band should play the traditional fight song when the players enter the field. It is absolutely up to the football staff, but I firmly believe that the team will be supported more by the band and the band parents if they are more involved at football games. A huge percentage of the adults that attend home football games are band parents, so if more band parents come to football games because their children are more involved, the more people will notice the football team and be supportive at, not only home games, but more games throughout the season.
cougar nation football: sorry it took so long to get back to you, something comes to mind when you mentioned changing the scenery will help boost team moral, coach Stadler quoted an individual who I cant remember at the time at our annual football banquet I believe my Sophmore year, but he said "if you keep doing what your doing, you will keep getting what you have always got." I have yet to forget that. Yes, maybe changes are in order, but the tradition of Rockingham football was never based on an entrance other than our fight song, very few ever touched the cougar for superstitious reasons, but nothing you change about coming onto the field will make any of the guys play harder. Like I said before, the game is won on the field not in the stands or the locker room. My question to you is, if a spectacular entrance is so stimulating, then why do away teams enter the stadium without a band or any entrance at that??? its all in the mind, coach Russell told us everything we ever did was "mind over matter" the guys gotta put their minds to winning before it will ever happen. i've played at Dudley's homecoming, it was intimidating to say the least, and none of us thought we had a chance. Until that mindset changes, nothing ever will at the Rock. I'm in full support of the football program, although I question some of the logic behind a few decisions. ie. a goalline fade on the 1 yardline against morehead that got intercepted when we have Antonio Miller and JR McGee in the back field, blows my mind. But again, I see what coach Stadler has done for our program so I trust that he can get the guys believing. Commitment, Repetition, discipline, and preparation are something that has to be strictly enforced in the guys. You gotta wanna win, and have to believe you can win. MIND OVER MATTER
Anonymous, not to sound negative or to stifle your opinion because everyone has one, part of the problem at the "Rock" has been the attitude. I can tell you this The attitude is changing there is an air of confidence in the team this year I have never seen before and I have been around the program since 1984. Even our playoff teams didn't work this hard in the weight room and in the preseason. Our guys are putting in the off-season work and I for one can tell you my sons attitude has changed this summer I have watch him mature this summer. We missed workouts last night for the first time due to car issues and you would of thought that I said we weren't going to the amusement park. Yes it is changing at the Rock and entrance music, Helmet design, uniforms, ect may not change the product but This change is all good. So keeping working together so we can win Together Positive...
I agree with the last post by anonymous on mindset. In the early years I posted a lot of sayings on the weight room wall. One of those sayings went something like this. "The first step to winning is believing. The first step to believing is saying it can be done." When we painted the weight room wall a few years ago all those sayings came down. For liability reasons, I decided to replace most of the motivational signs with safety and instructional signs.
I do believe from my own personal experience as an athlete that winning is a state of mind. It's been the most difficult thing to convince others in a losing culture of that truth. Still, there is hope. The players coming into the program now have won and they believe in themselves and each other to a greater degree than many before them. I credit the work done at home and in the RCYFL and middle school with most of this. An entrance is just that. It's an entrance. Unless we believe success is possible, we have little chance regardless the spectacle we create at entrance.
I cannot leave this post without commenting on the play you questioned. That one play always comes up when someone wants to critique my play calling. I quickly calculated that I have called over 5000 plays on Fridays over the last 8 seasons. I'm sure it's not the only play call that some have doubts about but since it comes up all the time I figure 1 in 5000+ ain't bad. Besides, we'd run Power the play before and got stuffed. You mentioned some good former players that you would have turned to. The fade call was to another pretty good one in Taylor Spangler. I figured since we had run Power and got stopped we'd try something different. My logic there was perhaps influenced by the banquet quote you mentioned earlier in your post.
I am not a football player but basketball player and I have never entered the gym believing that I cannot win. Not winning never enters my mind. Be a warrior. Make it happen.

WE REALLY SHOULD LET THE TEAM DECIDE WHEN ITS TIME!!!
If it is the Go Hard I pulled up it will probably not be allowed unless there is a clean version. Even then, it's content is borderline.
ReplyDeleteHow do you guys think the first two spring workouts went?
Should we replace the cougar stature with a huge rock?
ReplyDeleteAnd what about our entrance? Could we look into doing something totally different than the traditional fight song or any entrance song?

ReplyDeleteWhy don't we get suggestions from the team and go from there? It will be their song and needs to pump them up
